Touchweight
Touchweight is the amount of force needed to depress and control the key. The correction of key weighting, by carefully adding weights usually on player side of the key’s fulcrum, results in a smoother touch, increased responsiveness and ease of playing. Key weighting counterbalances inherent friction and weight of all moving parts at the other end of the key.
Parts replacement
If the piano has been heavily used, often the replacement of certain parts is best way to restore good playability. Inherent problems in the action design of a piano (the action ratio)—manifested as difficult-to-play instruments—can be corrected in a number of ways. Hammers, shanks, flanges, wippens and strings can an all be replaced, significantly improving a piano’s performance.
In other circumstances major improvements can be made by replacing components such as the pinblock, soundboard and bridges. This is considered major rebuilding. I have referrals for this more extensive kind of work.
